Saoradh Help Tackle Homeless Issue in Newry

Despite sub zero temperatures gripping the country, Saoradh An Iúir activists took the time to collect much needed resources for homeless people in Newry.

Local activists liased with a local charity ,”Newry Helping The Homeless”, and initiated a collection drive in order to distribute supplies to those most in need.

Helping The Homeless co-ordinator Tomàs Mac Seoin met and spoke with members of the Saoradh An Iúir Croabh and explained the work they do North and South. Tomás was extremely grateful for our contribution to the charity and both groups have pledged to work together in future.

Commenting on the activism Saoradh An Iúir chairperson Oliver White said “Our Newry members have collected food supplies and homeless packs which contain, sleeping bags, blankets, hats, gloves, thermals, bodywarmers and various other essential items.

“On Friday [March 2nd] we met with the local “Helping The Homeless” charity and presented this collection to them. We hope that this will in some way alleviate the harsh situation that many unfortunate people are facing in Newry and further afield.

“The fact that we had to organise this initative in the first place is demonstrable proof of how the failed capitalist political and economic system is impacting negatively upon many ordinary people.”

White continued “We organised this on the basis of community solidarity and giving assistance to those in need is a simple response that everyone has supported. The local community has responded to Saoradh’s homeless drive very generously and for that we are very grateful. We want to thank the local community for their fantastic support.

“In order to help tackle the homeless issue we need to look at radical ideas about the causes of, and providing solutions to, those same issues.”

Oliver finished by saying “It’s a sad indictment on society that we have people in dire need of basic necessities that most of us take for granted. It also reinforces our view that we need a new system in place across Ireland. One that will cherish all of the children equally, one that will ensure that no citizen will go cold or hungry, that system is a socialist system.”
