Saturday [April 21] saw the official launch of the party’s Saoradh An Iúir craobh in Newry.
Hundreds of people packed into the main hall of the local Irish National Foresters to celebrate the launch and show their support for the republican movement in the area.
Entertainment on the night was provided by ballad group ‘Kelly’s Men’ from Derry. The event also featured Banna Fliuit Naoimh Phadraig from Kilkeel and the Vol Julie Dougan Flute Band from North Armagh.
Speaking after the launch Saoradh An Iúir spokesperson Stephen Murney explained “Over the course of the past year Saoradh activists in the Newry area have been working tirelessly within our communities to rebuild and reinvigorate republicanism.
“Homelessness, drugs awareness, community concerns, road safety issues, suicide awareness and prevention and opposing the ongoing British Occupation are just some of the issues we are involved in.
“Our growth in members, and support, has culminated in the formation of a local Saoradh craobh alongside the Éistigi Republican Youth Wing.
Murney explained “The turnout at this launch tonight is testament to the fact that revolutionary republicanism is on the rise in Newry and the surrounding area.
“We look ahead to a future of struggle with dedication and commitment. Anyone who would like to play their part in the republican struggle in Newry and the surrounding area can contact any local Saoradh activist.”
